You do not get a CAGE code. You are assigned one. That is the whole confusion, and it is why a search for "how to get a CAGE code" lands you on a page selling a service for something that happens automatically.
Here is the mechanism.
What a CAGE code actually is
CAGE stands for Commercial and Government Entity code. It is a five-character identifier the Department of Defense's Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) uses to identify your business in its supply and contracting systems (DLA, CAGE Code). It is not something you fill out a form for on its own. It is a byproduct of registering your business on SAM.gov.
How it gets assigned
When you register your entity on SAM.gov, one of the questions asks whether you already have a CAGE code. If you do not, you select "no," and SAM.gov sends your entity information to DLA once your registration is submitted. DLA assigns the code and sends it back to SAM.gov, which attaches it to your registration. You do not fill out a separate DLA application, and you do not pay DLA anything (SAM.gov, Entity Registration Checklist).
This happens inside the same window as the rest of your SAM.gov entity validation, generally the same 7 to 10 business days GSA cites for a clean registration (GSA, "Register your business"). If DLA needs more information, your CAGE assignment can take longer than the rest of your registration. That is the one place a real delay happens, and it is DLA needing a document from you, not a fee you failed to pay.
Why "CAGE code services" exist anyway
Because the process is confusing and the language is bureaucratic, a whole category of sites sells "CAGE code registration assistance" for $200 to $600. Some of what they sell is legitimate hand-holding through a form. Some of it is charging you for a step you would get automatically by clicking "no" on a checkbox. None of it changes what DLA actually does behind the scenes: assign the code once your SAM.gov registration reaches that point, for free.
If a site tells you that you need to "apply for" or "purchase" a CAGE code separately from SAM.gov registration, that is not how the system works.
If your CAGE code is stuck
A few things actually cause a delay:
- Your business does not exist yet in DLA's system under a matching name. If your legal name in SAM.gov does not match your formation documents exactly, DLA can flag it for review the same way entity validation does.
- You are a foreign entity. Non-U.S. businesses go through NCAGE, a related but separate process with its own timeline.
- DLA is asking for documentation and the request is sitting in an email you have not seen. Check the notifications on your SAM.gov account, not just your inbox.
None of these are fixed by paying someone. They are fixed by giving DLA a document that matches what is already on file.
