What actually costs you time (and it isn't SAM.gov)
The 10-business-day estimate is for a clean submission. The delays people run into almost always trace back to a data mismatch: a business name that doesn't match the IRS letter-for-letter, an address format the entity-validation system doesn't recognize, a missing legal-structure document. Each one restarts the review, not the whole 10 days but a fresh wait behind it.

Common questions
Is this really free?
Yes. SAM.gov registration itself is always free directly through sam.gov, and the PrimeWright readiness check is free too, no card required.
Do I need a UEI before a CAGE?
Yes: your UEI is assigned first during SAM.gov entity validation, and your CAGE code follows as part of the same registration. The wizard walks you through the order.
How long does SAM registration take?
GSA's own guidance is up to 10 business days for a clean submission to become active. In practice it runs longer whenever entity validation flags a mismatch: a business name or address that doesn't line up exactly with IRS records, which can add anywhere from a few days to several weeks while it's manually reviewed. Having every checklist item above correct before you submit is the biggest lever you control.
What happens if my registration lapses while I have a bid pending?
Less than most people think. A FAR Council rule finalized in August 2025 confirmed the "two-point" standard: your registration only has to be active when you submit your offer and again when the government makes the award. A lapse in between doesn't automatically disqualify you. It still needs to be active and current at those two points, and you still have to renew annually to avoid a real lapse, but this isn't the disqualify-on-any-gap scare that gets repeated online.
